Successful During NJ’s Winter Bow Season

I recently came across this beautiful 8 pointer that was taken during January in New Jersey. The buck has good mass and great tine length. It came down to the wire for this New Jersey hunter who was able to arrow the brute at 25 yards. The buck green scored 123″.

Another Nice Long Island Buck

Long Island produced some good bucks this season. This buck was arrowed on November 22nd around 4:00 pm. The deer came in with a doe and was quartering away at 20 yards. It was a quick game with the buck down in 60 yards.

Late Season Hunting

Late season is tough for sure. The deer have been hunted hard over the last 4 months and they are extremely weary. To be successful you must hunt in areas where deer saw little if any pressure during most of the season. Hunt close to security cover so the deer feel safe and with a little luck on your side the deer will walk within shooting distance.

On January 3rd I was hunting in CT and saw 13 deer, however, only three does came within shooting range. Where I hunt in CT the deer herd is way out of whack and there are an over abundance of does. Only two of the deer I saw that morning were bucks.

The deer came into range cautiously and right around 20 yards the wind changed directions and they instantly picked up my scent. Fortunately I was able to get a shot off at the only broadside doe. She dropped in her tracks and I had my first deer of 2009!

NJ Bowhunters Game Dinner – February 28th

The United Bowhunters of NJ and Traditional Archers of NJ will host their annual game dinner on February 28th at Angelonis Cedar Gardens in Hamilton, NJ.

This is no ordinary game dinner. Each year all 500 seats are sold out. There are thousands in prizes to give away and every ticket bought there is a chance to win one of 2 hunts on the stubs.

Big NJ Non-typical – Down to the Wire

My friend Bucky from NJ sent me an email this morning about a late season monster his friend Jamey recently took:

Jamey missed this buck in the field at 110 yards. When he went to look for blood he walked into the woods where he last saw the deer go. A doe snorted but did not spook. He stood still and realized all the deer were still in the woods. He saw the buck about 100 yards which is tough in the woods here because they are dense. He put the crosshairs on the shoulder and touched off a shot. He went to the spot where the deer stood and 20 yards away the deer lay dead. It has 14 points all together and weighed approximately 150-160 lbs. It is his best deer to this date.

Monster CT Buck Comes Down with the Snow

It’s been a “rough” season for Jason. He took two beautiful CT bucks, but did spend countless hours in the stand grinding it out – it takes hard work to drop mature bucks. On December 23rd Jason was after the trail cam buck – a big 8 pointer he had been getting pictures of since the beginning of the month. The buck presented Jason with a difficult shot, but Jason was able to deliver and watched the monster drop just 70 yards away. What a brute! Congrats Jason!

Hunting in a Winter Wonderland

The snow has brought many opportunities to those willing to tough out the cold temps. I found a big 8 pointer last week and chased him all weekend. Finally he came out and I missed him at 30 yards – he might have jumped the string. Luckily not all hunters missed like I did. This big buck was taken in Southington, CT on Friday morning:

Late Season 11 Pointer in New York

On December 6th Rick took this awesome 11 pointer in New York. Rick was in his stand when a hot doe passed by. He had passed on three bucks between first light and 8:30am when the giant followed the same trail the other deer had used to walk right by Rick’s stand. With the buck at 25 yards, Rick drew back and let the arrow fly. The buck was down within 60 yards! The buck green scored 137″ and was 110″ the previous year. Rick has one of the buck’s sheds from 2007.
